MARCH 1945
11th March to 20th March 1945
Sunday 11th
Up quite late and spent morning having fun mucking about among a box of D's fancy dress clothes. Wrote to Phil after lunch and then a small tea and we all went out for a walk by Heath Pool with Kim. Started trying to compose the tale of last term at Aunties for the college magazine - wonder if t will ever get finished? Fairly early bed and read a bit.
Monday 12th
Up on 8.10 - C. going into Wok. on the bus. Went round to library - then into college. Finished letter to Phil and looked up some references for essay. Lecture - which finished early so had lunch with the others. Went down to lake for a breath of fresh real air - had another lecture and then dashed for 3.24 and leaped on the back just as it moved out. Changed to right part at Richmond. Read and slept. Home about 5 and then wrote letter home - also for blazer. Read - African conversation piece' - very interesting - would like to work there at some stage in my career.
Tuesday 13th
Up on 8.40. D. went on 8.10. Read going up and then before lectures - had two and then lunch in college. Spent all afternoon reading in common room and getting slightly fed up with everyone. Then went to lecture on 'Women n industry' by Margaret Bondfield - rather dull - I don't think she really knew what she was talking about. Came down on 6.34 - reading a novel by Mrs. Woolton - both sordid and dull - wouldn’t have thought it of her. Nana and Mummy had phoned up when I got in - most annoying. Read a bit. Letter from Mummy.
Wednesday 14th
Up on 8.40 - couldn't go boating as had a philosophy seminar after lunch - a glorious day and had it out of doors. Then Miss Roofs lecture - the last of the term - yippee! Had a lot of tea in college with D who then went up to the doctor. Read and at 5 went to Leicester Square met Janet and Joan Fuller - we went to the milk bar for tea and then up to Phoenix to see 'Another Love Story' - a weak and smootchy story, but interesting to see how very good acting redeemed it. Finished early so able to meet Brian and D. on the 9.24. In bed by 12. Parcel from home.
Thursday 15th
Up on 8.10 - why does this seem like the middle of the night, when 8.40 seems quite natural? Read - finished Mrs. Wootton's book - weak and sordid - over emphasis on the dirty side of sex - no plan and makes fun of human weaknesses - some sociologist! 2 hours lectures and then had one knocked off so wrote home and discussed Wolfons book with Win Hubbards. Lunch in college and then spent time till went for train getting a splinters out of D's seat! - she got it in sliding along in seat in the physics lab. Read a bit on 2.24 and then spent rest of day finishing notes and starting to write out 'Primitive Women'. D. has had a super blue wuffy coat sent her.
Friday 16th
Up on early train - wet but cleared up and a lovely day. A lecture. Then dashed round to New Theatre and got stools for gallery. Back to end of a meeting of socs. to arrange about doing a health survey in the college. Then a lecture - couldn't face Dr. Luitkins and as we did that lecture last year, cut it and read in the common room and chatted with Janet. Then had a sandwich lunch and discussion in Winifred Hubbards room - and afterwards spent afternoon in common room with D. doing some more of essay. then had tea at an A.B.C and went with D to see 'Peer Gynt' - enjoyed it just as much as before - would see it a dozen times more. A filthy old mum there smelling as though she'd wet her knickers and with a little boy hidden under her clothes! Too late for 9.24 so waited for Brian and came on last train - draping ourselves around the carriage sleeping most of the time. Took stockings of Mummies to be repaired - letter from Mummy.
Saturday 17th
Up about 9. Long breakfast - then a book and mucked about in the kitchen the rest of the morning. Had early lunch and to pictures to see 'Going my way'. Have seen it before but quite worth seeing again. Tea at BR and back for supper and a lazy evening - read a bit. D. still muddled over the family reaction to her and Brian. It is an awful shame that Auntie Win can't see that the two of them just fit and so stop worrying about Odette wanting B. Wish I could do something to straighten it out for them - because D. is obviously getting fonder of B and he as pig-headed as you make them. Hope there isn't a firely bust up over it anyway.
Sunday 18th
Up about 9.30. Spent morning mending stockings and finishing reading D's book 'Frenchman’s Creek' - quite a relief to come to a novel again. Then in afternoon did some of sketch on last time at Aunties - I think we really may finish it! Wrote home. An early tea and then a walk with Kim. Poor little feller has got his digestive system a bit groggy and smells badly so gets avoided by everyone - much to his disgust. Brian came for evening and had usual lazy time. a game of Pit. D. has had it out with her mother and then Odette about it and the atmosphere is considerably clearer.
Monday 19th
Up on 8.40. Read - or tried to - but then went to sleep completely. Want to go to theatre on Wednesday so explored to see what could go to. Went into college and had to endure an hour of Twerpy telling while I was trying to finish and essay. Then had a lecture. Had lunch and then dashed down to Waterloo for 3.24 train so could get to Wok. in time for 5 o'clock hair appointment. Had a trim and wash and set - and this time she only charged 5/6. Wet, as is usual with days when have hair done, but muffled it up and in in time for supper. Then wrote out most of essay. Fairly early bed.
Tuesday 20th
Up on 8.40 and pottered around doing one or two odd jobs, going to library etc. and then a bit of work. Big event of the day was going to visit the Borstal Institute at Aylesbury. Joan Rawkinson and I went with some of the social studies people. Very interesting - but most disturbing - the amount we decided we could do towards prison reform was amazing - this place seemed rather to be neither a prison nor a reformatory - still even there they seem to get results. Wrote quite copious notes on it afterwards, almost feel like writing to somewhere like the Home office protesting about it. Quite a long journey and missed the 6.34. Still worked some of the time so it wasn't wasted. Letters from Luc and Daddy with a note from Mummy.
